Reverberation Time (RT) at 500 Hertz (Hz) is often targeted because proper RT in the mid-frequency range, which includes 500 Hz, is crucial for both speech intelligibility and music clarity.
However, RT is frequency-dependent; an imbalance in RT across the frequency spectrum can negatively impact a room's acoustics even though the RT at 500 Hz is the targeted range. For instance, a long RT in the low frequencies coupled with a shorter RT in the mid/high frequencies can result in a room sounding "boomy" or "muddy," which can hinder effective communication.
It is therefore important to balance frequencies across the spectrum, not just at 500 Hz. A lot of speech intelligibility lies in the 1000-2000 Hz range, for example. 500Hz is often regarded as a quick indicator of a room's acoustical performance, but understanding performance across the entire frequency spectrum is key to successful treatment plans.
